Character Creation

1. Get a MUD client.

Turiel is a Multi-User Dungeon (MUD), as opposed to an MMORPG or a Discord channel. You will need a MUD Client to connect to the game of Turiel. Turiel specifically is a PennMUSH, a derivative of MUD focused on social gaming; if you don't have an appropriate client, you can find one on the web. Ones that are designed to optimize the MUSH experience are the best bet, but almost anything that can be used for MUDs can be used for MUSHes.

Two recommended clients are BeipMU* and MUSHClient. MUSHClient has more features but is harder to use.

MUSHClient: https://www.gammon.com.au/downloads/dlmushclient.htm
BeipMU* https://beipdev.github.io/BeipMU/

If you absolutely have no idea how to use a MUD, you can click this link below. Please read the section 'Fundamentals'.
https://www.gammon.com.au/mush/mush.htm

Once you have a MUD client and a basic idea how to use MUDs, you can connect to Turiel with on Turiel.Kydance.Net on port 6669. Some people have reported connection issues with this address. If that doesn't work try Medusa.Kydance.Net:6669 and if that doesn't work try 66.228.54.244:6669.

Follow the on-screen instructions once you're connected to Turiel to get a character.

If you ever get lost, once you're connected to the game feel more than free to ask the game for help by typing WHO (to learn who is connected) and then '+pub <your message>' or even paging someone for help with 'page <name of person> = <message>', i.e. '+pub Can you help me?' or 'page grigori = Can you help me?'

2. Get together the appropriate books.

Turiel is a MUSH adaptation of the 5th Edition D&D (5E) ruleset. You will need, at a bare minimum, the 5th Edition Player's Handbook. If you don't have this book, you can use the resource of https://www.5esrd.com/. Be warned that as a System Reference Document, that website is missing some rules content that you would have in the official books.

Turiel allows the use of all 5E hardcover books. Turiel also allows the use of any Unearthed Arcana resources minus Urban Arcana (which is too futuristic) to include the Mystic Class. You may access the Unearthed Arcana material here: http://dnd.wizards.com/articles-tags/unearthed-arcana

Finally, Turiel also uses the 3rd-party Character Options: Talents I and II PDFs from the Dungeon Master's Guild website. All characters have access to them. You may purchase them here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214641/Character-Options-Talents-5e

You may also (ahem) access the documents to these links. Be warned that these links may be pulled from the web in the future:

3. Design your character.

Before creating your character, you should have an idea of the kind of character you want to create both in terms of storytelling (i.e. their background, their goals, their appearance, etc.) and mechanics (their character class, their ability scores, etc.). You don't need to have a firm knowledge of the rules to create a character and get playing, but you should know WHO you want to play.

Some starting questions questions you might want to ask yourself before proceeding:

  1. What is your character's full name? What is their species, gender, social class, and region?
  2. Who is part of the character's family? Their friends? Any rivals or organizations?
  3. What motivates your character day-to-day? Especially: what motivates them to risk life and limb on adventure?
  4. What are your characters' long-term plans? Where do they see themselves a year from now if things mostly go right?
  5. How would other people see your character? What would your friends say about you? What would your enemies ideally think about you?
  6. What's the biggest asset you bring to a party? Why would an otherwise competent adventuring party not want to have you around?

Because you will be playing your character on a MUSH, you will need at a bare minimum a one or two-paragraph description of your character. Having a picture will also help. They will especially help you in the later phases, once you get ready to make a character page.

4. Character Creation House Rules

Character Creation on Turiel is more complicated than other Dungeons and Dragons games. To summarize the big changes:

  1. Multiclassing is not allowed as an option at this time.
  2. Variant Human is not allowed as an option.
  3. Races that are not on the wiki may be allowed. Ask staff for additional help.
  4. All characters start with a free feat at 1st level, regardless of race!
  5. All characters start with a free talent at 1st level, and gain an additional one every 3rd level.
  6. You may roll for stats or use the standard array. If you roll pathetically low for stats, contact staff.
  7. All characters gain maximum hit points per level.
  8. All characters gain crafting points to be used to craft material. Learn more here: http://turiel.wikidot.com/crafting

5. (OPTIONAL) Putting together a Wiki Page

If you would like to start with an additional 1000 experience points (putting you at 3rd level instead of 1st) you can put together a character page on this wiki.

Follow the instructions here: http://turiel.wikidot.com/characters. You may want to look at the other character pages to learn how other people format their pages and what information you'd like to add.

6. Putting together your character +sheet.

6A. Getting Started

Type 'home', then 'PN', then CG to enter character generation. Follow the on-screen instructions. Type 'look' at any time to see what the current instructions and your choices are.

6B. Selecting Your Race

First, choose your race with '+race <choice>'. Some races, such as elves, have subraces as well. After selecting a race, type 'look' to see the available subraces and then type '+race/sub <subrace>'. If you are dissatisfied with your choice, you can always just type '+race <choice>' or '+race/subrace <choice>' again. This will clear your subrace if you select a new race. Type '+done' when you are ready to move on.

6C. Selecting Your Class

Now you will select your class with '+class <choice>'. Type '+class help' to see all of your available classes. You can always pick a different class. After you pick a class, you will see the list of available skills for your class. Do not worry too much about those for now, these are just telling you what skills you can pick once you get to that point of character generation. Once again, type '+done' when are you ready to move on.

6D. Assigning Your Ability Scores

Now you will generate your stat numbers, where you will then assign them to the basic attributes of Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Characters in Turiel have the option to pick the Stat Array option of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 -OR- the ability to roll for their stats. Usually, rolling for stats will give you much better results than the default array. Once you roll for stats, you can never roll for them again without the help of staff! Type 'look' to see what you rolled at any time.

Once you have your stats, either from '+choose roll' or '+choose default', you will need to assign the raw numbers to the appropriate ability score. Type '+assign <number> to <ability>' to do so, one for each stat. Use the three-letter version of the ability name rather than the full name. For example, if I rolled a '16' for one of my six stats and I wanted to put it in strength, I would type '+assign 16 to str'. If you are unsatisfied with an assignment, type '+unassign <number> to <ability>'. You cannot directly swap stat numbers, you must unassign them first.

If you selected a race that lets you assign additional stats (such as half-elf) you will be able to use the '+spend <ability>' command to assign additional points.

Keep in mind that no stat can have its final number be above 20 in CharGen by any means! If you end up with a higher total than that somehow, the extra points will be wasted!

Once you are finished assigning stats and spending any additional points, type +done to continue.

6E. Assigning your Alignment and Background

Select your alignment at this time, using '+alignment <alignment name>'. Turiel lets you pick any of the standard nine alignments. Being evil is fine, as long as you keep in mind that Turiel has laws typical to most countries and your character is expected to play nice with other players on the game.

Then, assign your character one of the backgrounds with '+background <background name>'. If there is a Dungeons and Dragons background that you would like to be that is not listed as an option, please contact staff to see if they can add it in. These backgrounds are largely mechanical and assign skills, proficiencies, and a background feature. For more information, read up on the background listed in the appropriate book (usually, but not always the 5E Player's Handbook) or website.

After selecting a background, type '+help +info' to see how to fill out info fields. Before going further, you will want to fill out +info sections for your Ideal, Bond, and Flaws. Note that you can choose any Ideal, Bond, and Flaws you want for your character, not just what are listed for your Background. If you'd like, you can fill out additional +info fields such as your description, your personality, your spellbook, and so on.

You may also want to create a Background section for your Feats and Talents, since those things are not (currently) recorded on your character sheet.

Type +done once you've selected an alignment, picked a background, and filled out your +info.

6F. Picking your skills.

You will now pick out your skills from a list from the skills available to your class. Type '+cskill <skill name>' to pick from the list.

Some races, such as half-elves, get additional skills on top of their background and racial skills. Use +skill to pick those skills.

As always, type +done when you're finished selecting your skills to continue. Hang on, you're almost done!

6G. Finishing up.

At this point, you're almost ready to be approved to join the game of Turiel!

First, you will need a description. This doesn't need to be the same description as what you brainstormed for the wiki page, if you've done that exercise. Write a one to two paragraph description of what someone would see if they looked at your character ahead of time.

Once you have that description ready, type '+help +desc' for a walkthrough on how to set your description properly.

The second part is optional, but recommended. Put together a +finger. A +finger is a condensed summary of your character to let people aware of any roleplaying hooks you'd like people to know about your character at a glance. It's like +info, but a general summary rather than specific sections. Type '+help +finger' for more information.

Finally, type +approve to finish with character generation! You are done and ready to play! You can always see your completed character sheet by typing '+sheet' afterwards. You can also look at other peoples' character sheets by typing '+sheet <player name>'.

6H. Adjusting your character sheet.

By the way, did you pick a feat or a talent that would adjust your ability score? If so, contact a staff member to adjust your character sheet appropriately.
