The City of Spires 90 years after the destruction of the royal palace.

Age of the Empire

The story of Turiel starts over 800 years ago when the Lord Emperor Turiel himself ruled over the world, A mysterious figure in history Turiel was a powerful Mage King who ruled with godlike magic and a powerful army armed with legendary weapons that could rend the armor of enemy soldiers or draw down lightning and destroy the walls of cities in seconds. This was the age of high magic, when mages ruled nations and the royal families held famous weapons of glory and legend that are still spoken of today. This was the age where the Turiel Empire became the center of the world, when the other kings became puppets under the Great Emperor and the armies of Turiel controlled everything.

Not all was good for everyone though. Magic was slowly leeching away from the populace and the power of the wards around the Imperial Palace grew stronger. 200 years into his rule Turiels nation was unrecognizable. Where once priestly magic kept the crops vibrant and the people healthy and great mages ensured cities never took damage from weather there was now a realm at the mercy of the seasons where people had to suffer through months of little food, the average lifespan dropped by decades, and people had to rely on medicine and herbs to keep themselves healthy.

This was a slow decline though and no one took notice at first. This didnt last though and trouble was already starting to spread among the peasantry. Food prices rose, resources for workmen shrunk as wood and stone was claimed by the nobles to maintain villas and castles, and banditry grew as desperate men without work and money went to the worst measures. The army cracked down on dissent and purged whole villages under the orders of Turiels commanders and generals, Temples gave away stores of food and gold to keep the populace calm and for a while things calmed and the realms under turiels command were able to even out the wrinkles of a magicless world. And so it went for hundreds of years as people had to relearn proper agriculture, engineering and medicine.

The Fall of the Empire

The years of Stability had been good for Turiel, even with magic now being in a state where it was largely gone with even the most powerful healers of the long lived elves being unable to cure more than minor illnesses the kingdoms had cleared up unrest. The army had halted the Orcish Tribes from the north taking anymore of the Turiel lands through a series of treaties and peace offerings, The elvish realms had agreed to share more crops with the other countries, and riots and separatism was nearly gone.

Things were finally looking up for the first time in hundreds of years. The unseen Emperor Turiel had even made himself known to the world for the first time in 200 years to call the Curia Regis; The council of every ruling noble in his empire together for reasons…that no one ever found out. It was during this council of the Curia Regis that the Imperial Castle and the city of Scion were suddenly destroyed in a world shaking explosion that rained glittering shards of stone, crystal and precious metals over the world in ways that caused massive storms and waves of magical chaos that drove cities to there knees, tribes to scatter into terrified fragments and the Imperial Armies started to arrest or just attack villages in waves as superstitious civilians panicked from what saw as the end of the world.

The Age of Chaos

After the destruction of the Imperial Castle and the city of Scion around it magic rushed back to the world. Children with a propensity for magic burned down homes on accident, Sages who had spent there whole lives learning hours long chants to start small fires or heal warts were suddenly able to call down thunderstorms, and the great temples were able to communicate with the gods again. Holy days were called by some of the temples of the light while the more ambiguous temples declared the end times and caused more chaos and more death as believers rioted or burned down opposing temples.

The rains of chaos did bring grandure and magic but the generals of the military and the lesser nobles of the empire soon realized the Emperor was gone and suddenly went about carving out there own little fiefdoms. To make it worse with the lack of any leading nobles and the infrasturcture they bad built over the last few hundreds things collapsed in the wake of the chaos that was quickly spreading. Finally to make matters worse the biggest event in human history brought upon the last and worst thrashes of chaos.

The Adventurers Age

The waves of magic spreading over the world and the fragments of the Imperial Palace spawned the first dungeon under land where the Palace stood, Otherwise known as the Spire Pit. A huge hole under where the Palace stood woudnt have been worrying had not the first known Elder Dragon hadnt crawled out of the first Dungeon and proceeded to wipe out a small army of soldiers. The Spire Pit though wasnt the only dungeon to crop though, Towers made of bone forming out in valleys, Sewers ripping themselves apart and forming underground necropolis full of undead monsters. These dungeons sparked the age of heroes and great warriors, or as they are known now 'Adventurers.

At first the Dungeons were seen as a danger that needed to be stopped and groups of solders and adventurers dove in trying to clear them out and stop whatever created them. This was quickly stopped though as the death of each monster also brought with it a new resource that changed the world, Magic Gems. At first just a mystery to any scholar who managed to get there hands on one they were quickly used in the crafting of powerful magic items, airships to make trade easier, and myriad other uses. On top of that the adventurers were finding riches from bygone ages, gold coins from the first age of the elves, Mithril bars stamped with ancient dwarven crests, and even Ebony sculptures from the Orcish nomads. So the Adventurers guild was formed and the world was changed in ways no one could expect as the dungeons were almost farmed by the newly formed guild.

The City of Spires

In the wake of the dungeons creation and the reforming of nations the great City of Spires was built over the remains of the imperial palace. Built over the Pit-like first dungeon the great guild spire was built over the course of decades and around it a great city spawned. This city is where our story takes place. The City of Spires is now the figurative center of the world. The great guild forms the economic center of the city since they have the monopoly on the sales of magic gems and dungeon treasures while the city around it houses the best crafters and merchants possible for the valuable goods that move through the city and then spreading out to the rest of the world.

And so it is, 100 years since magic came back and 50 years since the birth of the guild. The world has become a very different place with nations back in a state of uneasy equilibrium and whole cities built around dungeons that supply them with Magic Gems and rare materials. The temples are open again with healing magic making the world a safer place while wizards make it a slightly less safe but at least more interesting place.
